A utility knife bridges the gap between a chef’s knife and a paring knife, offering both flexibility and control in everyday kitchen tasks. In this traditional form it could be described as an elongated paring knife. It has a similar blade height and thickness but with more length on the tip, giving it greater reach and usefulness slicing on the board. A utility knife is incredibly handy and you will find yourself reaching for it for a majority of daily tasks, from pealing fruits and veggies to slicing cheese and meats.

Materials
Our blades are made with high carbon steel. This steel is known for its edge retention and durability. However, unlike stainless steel these blades will naturally oxidize over time and gain a beautiful patina.

Care must be taken to prevent corrosion or rust on the blade. Click here for information on how to care for your Origin Handcrafted knife.
Guarantee
Our knives are designed with everyday use in mind and come with an Everyday Structural Guarantee. If for some reason our knives fail to perform as they should, we will replace or repair them at no cost to you. Note that this guarantee does not apply if the knife has been misused or improperly cared for.

To ensure your knife lasts as long (and longer) than you do, follow the steps outlined in our Knife Care section.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take my product to arrive?

Knives ship every Friday. Ring production time can be found on the Ring Info page.

Shipping time varies by region but typically Canadian and US orders arrive 1 - 2 weeks after shipment. Overseas order average 2 - 3 weeks after shipment.

What steel are your knives made from?

I use a variety of steels in my knives. Each knife listing will state the specific steel used.

I specialize in reclaimed carbon steel sourced from antique sawmill blades and files. This means I don't know the exact steel type so I judge them based on the heat treatment process. File steel heat treats the same as 1095 carbon steel and sawmill steel is quite similar to 80crv2, both of which are excellent for knife making. My steel hardness is between 60 and 61 RC.

How do I care for a carbon steel knife?

With proper care carbon steel will develop a patina over time. This adds corrosion resistance. Care is simple:

- Clean your knife after each use. Soap and warm water work great.

- Dry your knife before storage.

- Do not put your knife in the dishwasher.

- Hone your knife on a leather strop or steel rod to keep the edge keen.

How can we return or exchange the ring?

We offer free returns and exchanges if a ring breaks or does not fit properly due to a manufacturing error. Exchanges or returns will not be honoured if the ring was made to the order’s specification, so please ensure you have ordered the correct size.
